GPS: A Safety Measure for Kids

Knowing that something terrible might happen to their kids once they take their eyes off them is what keeps most parents from sleeping at night. Abductions, attempted abductions, even harassment can occur while parents are away. For this reason, parents want to be updated with their children's exact location all the time.

To ease their worries, several GPS devices specifically designed to cater to this concern are available on the market. There is the Brickhouse locator that allows parents to track their children, pets or even elder members of the family suffering from Alzheimers disease.

This device involves placing a homing tag on the person being tracked. To lead you to the location of the tagged person, this locator uses the RFID technology. According to the manufacturer, the device can track someone up to 600 feet away without any obstructions.

There are also devices that are best suited for younger kids. One of them is called the "Mommy I'm Here!" locator. The device takes the form of adorable teddy bears that can be glued to the child's shoes. With a 56 DB signal, this device alerts the parent once the child is within 150 ft from the receiver. With this device, the parent can easily locate a kid who wanders off in a big crowd.

Another product from Brickhouse is a device that can be installed within the child's jacket or bag. The device, otherwise known as the GPS Jacket, contains a mini GPS device. This device is capable of using Real Time Monitoring System, which allows the parent to track his or her child.

Nowadays, shoes are being produced that contain GPS devices that utilizes the Quantum Satellite Technolog and the GTX. Both make use of the Real time Monitoring System.

Another device employing the GPS Real Time Monitoring System is the GemTrac GPS Personal Locator System. All the parent has to do is to log onto a website to keep track of their child. The system also provides outbound calls to only two pre-configured numbers.

Another fascinating feature in this system is the option that lets parents set rules that their children must stay at home. This feature is known as the Geofence. If the child attempts to go outside the fence, the parents will be alerted about this attempt.

Parents' worries change as their children grow up. Once their children obtain a driver's license, they then worry about where they take the family car or even how fast they drive.

With the Garmin and Magellan GPS system, you can instantly track down your kids and your automobile. In less than an hour, all cars with a GPS device installed can be tracked down, once the parents access a website. In addition to safety measures, parents who install GPS devices in their cars may be eligible for money via discounts that insurance companies may give them.

One can never take away worries from parents. However, they can at least be lessened with the right GPS devices. They might seem to be a bit expensive; but when it comes to their children's safety, it is only a small price to pay.

GPS devices are sure to be one of the top gifts for the holiday season, whether it's for dad to use on his boat, the wife for her car or your brother for his hiking expeditions. A GPS is so much more than "just a map." While the features vary greatly, on some GPS systems you can look up restaurants or gas stations, play "Amazing Race" type games, reroute your commute around traffic jams and listen to satellite radio.

"Garmin is founded on the principles of innovation, convenience, performance, value, and service," proclaims the company website. In fact, Garmin, which has been around since 1989, is the most well-known North American brand name in Global Positioning Systems today.

Based out of Kansas, no part of the manufacturing process gets outsourced, as the company designs, manufactures, markets and sells all of their products themselves. They offer GPS navigation systems for all different lifestyles, such as fitness-based systems, automotive GPS systems, systems for hikers or campers, aviation technology, marine technology and site navigation for geocachers.

In addition to Garmin, Magellan is another leader in GPS systems, with their Magellan Maestro 4250 being the most popular GPS model, which ranges from $90-$279 online. When buying an auto GPS device, look at how many "points of interest" are offered. Anything less than 2 million will be frustrating, whereas the ideal number is around 6 million. Next, check for screen size. They range from 2.1 inches all the way up to 7 inch.

If you plan to use your GPS while walking, you'll want something smaller, whereas the 7 inch is best for an RV. For cars, the Garmin nuvi 680 is an ideal 4.3 inch. You'll want something with good functionality that allows you to switch maps or search points of interest with a button tap or two.

Some of the newer, more advanced GPS systems include things like text-to-speech, multi-destination routing, satellite radio/audiobook player/MP3 player capacity and Bluetooth speakerphone capabilities.

Using GPS to track vehicles - it is not exclusively for the spies and the police anymore. With the benefits of this powerful technology, companies are allowing consumers to take charge of their lives and install GPS devices in their vehicles.

The reasons to use GPS tracking can be many: you can use these devices to help recover a stolen vehicle, or can help keep an eye on your car when you loan it to someone (to ensure they remain at the speed limit and drive safely), or they could even be used as an aid to parenting a teen rebel. How you choose to use GPS tracking is up to you.

One of the more interesting to uses of this new technology is helping parents in parenting their children. By installing a GPS tracking device in your car or truck, you get an instant awareness of your son's driving habits and location. This can be very important for several reasons and in the hands of a wise and discerning parents can be very helpful in educating children to respect the law and be safe.

If you are not familiar with how the GPS is able to follow the car of your child, here is a brief introduction:

GPS means Global Positioning System and this system consists of a dozen satellites orbiting the earth. These satellites emit a radio signal such that GPS receivers can pick up.

The device is used to track your car by taking these signals that communicate information to your unit and processing that information. This information may include the time that the transmission was sent via satellite and the satellite that sent the message. Your GPS unit takes the information and uses mathematics - specifically the principles of unity trilateration - to calculate the position at some point in time.

If you only had a GPS logger that would be the end of it. But a GPS device that can be used in a car your child drives will not be a GPS logger, it will be a GPS pusher. This device will transmit the information to a processing center where the company you purchased your subscription will interpret the data and make it available to you via the Internet or some other means.

The information that it will deliver often includes the speed and direction of the teen that you are tracking. They will even keep a history of car's position for a month or more!

Using GPS tracking on your teen's car is certainly a valid way to learn information about your teenager that they might withhold from you otherwise. Parents have a right to know where their teenage is.
